Our Leadership Team

  • Matthew Chiu

    Co-founder and Director

    Matthew is Co-Founder of Protopia Group. He is an MPhil in Economics student at the University of Oxford and holds a BSc in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at LSE. He has worked in startups and venture capital firms, serving as a scout for Entrepreneur First and On Deck in London. He previously worked at Boston Consulting Group, advising a major intergovernmental organisation on a climate and sustainability initiative. He led LSE Entrepreneurs, one of LSE’s largest societies, and served as Director of Partnerships at London Strategic Consulting, the UK’s leading student-run strategy consulting organisation. Matthew has wide-ranging research interests, and has worked on researching international policy with collaborators from Stanford and UC Berkeley and research on innovation economics at Imperial College London.

  • Daniel Seymour

    Co-founder and Director

    Daniel is Co-Founder of Protopia Group. He is completing a BSc in Econometrics and Mathematical Economics at LSE. He has previously worked in tech and start-ups as a product manager at Expedia Group (travel) and product operations at Semble (healthcare). Academically, he is interested in industrial organisation and is currently researching risk aversion in auction design. Finally, he led LSE’s Google Student Development Club, was the treasurer of LSE Effective Altruism and was a research assistant at LSE’s Department of Management, where he researched a novel policy design to deter corruption in Brazil.

  • Bosco Hung

    Co-founder and Director

    Bosco is Co-Founder of Protopia Group. He is an MPhil in International Relations student at the University of Oxford and holds a BSc in Politics and International Relations at LSE. He has held research positions at numerous academic associations and geopolitical consultancies, such as the International Team for the Study of Security Verona, the Nicholas Spykman International Center for Geopolitical Analysis, the Global Studies Institute in Hong Kong, and London Politica. He has researched Chinese politics and emerging technology and has spoken on France 24 and Al Jazeera. He has written for Connections: The Quarterly Journal, The Journal of Conflict, Intelligence, and Warfare, The National Interest, UDN, Initium Media, and other peer-reviewed publications and newspapers. His research was presented in the UK Parliament, the Oxford Hong Kong Forum, and other professional settings.

  • Sonja Belkin

    Managing Editor

    Sonja is a BSc in Psychological and Behavioural Science student at LSE, going on to pursue an MPhil in computational political psychology at Cambridge. As President of the LSESU Behavioural and Psychological Science Society, she co-launched the national Behavioural Science Careers Fair and founded the LSE psychological and behavioural sciences journal, Irrationale, where she acts as co-Editor-in-Chief. She has significant experience in behavioural science consulting both as the founder of BPS Consulting, advising charities like One for the World, and through numerous internships at consultancies Innovia Technology, BeHive and Basis Social. Her main interests include human-computer interaction, as well as the applications of social and cognitive psychology to issues like polarisation, misinformation, and radicalisation.

  • Felix Brown

    Research Lead

    Felix is a BSc in Philosophy, Politics and Economics student at LSE. His interests lie in effective governance and the barriers that impede it. Specifically, he is focused on social welfare programs, behavioral public economics, and labor force participation. This has led him to work as the Research Director at the LSE Undergraduate Political Review, as well as on intellectual property policy in D.C. this summer. In addition to being the President of the LSESU Philosophy Society, he has also conducted quasi-experimental research on satisficing models.

  • Jimin Oh

    Research Lead

    Jimin is a recent graduate from LSE, currently an MSc in Sustainable Urbanism student at UCL. She is the founder of LSE Urban+, the first urban planning society at LSE, and worked in many consultancy and research projects related to public policy and social sustainability. In the past, she served as a research assistant at LSE Phelan US Centre, working on GIS-supported policy diffusion analysis, and at UCL Bartlett School of Planning, researching knowledge co-production in ‘left-behind places’. She is particularly interested in innovation in the field of property development and urbanisation, such as transport planning, social sustainability, megacities, and economic geography.

  • Joshua Muthu

    Research Lead

    Josh is a BSc in Economics student at the University of Warwick. He is currently doing a placement at HM Revenue and Customs, working on private pensions analysis. He is also a Research Assistant to Dr Witold Więcek, a Bayesian statistics researcher working within global health and development from the University of Chicago. In the past, he interned at Frontier Economics, the UK Department for Education, and MedAccess. He is involved with the European Summer Program on Rationality (ESPR) and is doing an undergraduate research project on a cost-benefit analysis of non-use rights for coal deposits.

  • Avani Kanitkar

    Brand Strategy Director

    Avani is a BSc in Economics student at LSE. She is passionate about sustainable growth and behavioural economics, which sparked an interest in ethical marketing and branding. She is the Head of Marketing for the LSE Economics Society, LSE’s largest academic society. She has previously held various marketing and design roles, including a social media startup and a student-run news publication.
